The
WAFT is not available for sale at this time. There are eight prototypes
in use, all owned by the Veterans Administration and located at
various medical centers around the US. Engineering is currently
underway to improve the areas of weight, size, and cosmetics, and
most importantly to upgrade the software. The new design will allow
some flexibility in upfitting to accommodate institutional needs
(hospitals and rehab centers), or commercial needs (health clubs,
recreation centers, etc.). The new version will be available about
12 months from now.
The Wheelchair Aerobic Fitness Trainer (WAFT) is a computerized
treadmill that allows a person in a wheelchair the freedom
to exercise, train for sports or competition, undergo rehabilitation
or stress testing, or engage in recreational/educational activities.
An early version of the WAFT was patented in 1990 by Drs. Ed Langbein
and Lutz Kynast at the Hines VA Hospital, Hines, IL. Still not satisfied
that desired performance factors were achieved, the VA decided to
put out bids for assistance from private engineering firms.
